Welcome
In April 2008, the National Metropolis Conference will be held in Atlantic Canada for the first time. This event will provide a tremendous opportunity to understand how immigration and diversity vary across the country, particularly in regions that have not experienced high levels of immigration recently. Plenary sessions and workshops will explore this variance and how it influences, or is affected by, local, regional and national policies and programs.
In addition, the conference will explore the immigration objectives pursued by different orders of government, including labour market responsiveness, regional economic development, family reunification, humanitarian considerations, and ensuring the vitality of official language minority communities. Two of these areas will be addressed by pre-conference events. A seminar in Moncton will explore recent findings on the attraction, integration and retention of immigrants in francophone minority communities across the country, while a symposium in Halifax will explore international policy and research on immigration and the family.
The 10th National Conference will showcase the six priority areas that will guide Metropolis in the coming five years: 1) citizenship and social, cultural and civic integration; 2) economic and labour market integration; 3) family, children and youth; 4) housing and neighbourhoods; 5) policing, security and justice; and 6) welcoming communities.
Recognizing that arts and culture often reflect emerging issues, events related to these themes will run throughout the conference, including film showings, theatre, visual arts exhibitions, dance, and readings.
